FieldWorks Awarded $1.5 Million Contract from San Antonio´s Municipal Utility, City Public Service

Eden Prairie, Minn., September 17, 1997 - FieldWorks, Incorporated (NASDAQ: FWRX), a leading maker of application-specific computing solutions for demanding field environments, has been awarded a $1.5 million contract from the City of San Antonios municipal utility, City Public Service (CPS).

FieldWorks will supply CPS with in-vehicle field service computer solutions.

CPS will use the computers to improve efficiencies and customer service, to save time and money.

CPS uses technology to simplify job functions. Mounted in utility trucks, the FieldWorks solutions will be part of a larger integrated mobile data communications system that dispatches gas and electric service personnel electronically. The system also monitors the location of crews and issues electronic work orders to personnel in the vicinity of problems, reducing response time. When fully implemented, CPS forecasts the mobile data communications system to save $1.4 million per year.

"This is a milestone for FieldWorks in the utility marketplace," says Steve Twite, director of international business. "With the experience and exposure weve gained over the past years, FieldWorks has become the leader in high-performance in-vehicle applications like that of CPS."

FieldWorks is working with MDSI Mobile Data Solutions Inc. of Richmond, British Columbia-the leading supplier of mobile workforce management and enterprise-wide mobile connectivity solutions for the utility industry-to provide CPS complete utility service solutions including MDSIs mobile workforce management software.

The solutions are based on FieldWorks FW5000 Series II rugged, modular notebooks-a popular, upgradeable solution for utility and law enforcement in-vehicle computing that can provide GPS mapping, computer-aided dispatching, high-speed data communications and high-resolution graphics technologies.

CPS is one of the largest municipal utilities in the country, serving more than 500,000 electric customers and approximately 300,000 gas customers.
