At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.
Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.
Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

Kontron ETXexpress-PM Computer-On-Module Awarded 'Hot 100' Status for 2006
SAN DIEGO, January 24, 2007 Kontron's ETXexpress-PM has been named a "Hot 100" product for 2006 by the editorial staff of EDN magazine. This honor is reserved for the best products featured in the publication's pages over the course of the year as decided by the journal's technical editors.
"The Kontron Embedded Modules team devoted a lot of effort to developing the COM Express standard, said Matthias Huber, leader of the Embedded Modules division. âHaving the Kontron ETXexpress-PM computer-on-module named to EDN's list of "Hot 100" products confirms the significance these modules have in the embedded computer market."
The Kontron ETXexpress-PM was honored by the magazine in the "Computers and Peripherals" category. The list encompasses a range of architectures and technologies and a plethora of categories from analog ICs to multimedia to test-and-measurement tools.
