At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.
Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.
Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

Kontron meets new challenges in Embedded Computing with NXP Layerscape® Arm-based Processors
Augsburg, Germany, November 29, 2017 – Kontron, a leading global provider of IoT/Embedded Computing Technology (ECT), today announced a range of Single Board Computers (SBCs) featuring the NXP Layerscape® Arm-based processors to meet the growing needs for high performance embedded computing, low power dissipation and supply longevity. The new SBC product family will benefit from multi-core scalability and will be available in various versions ranging from low power dual-core up to eight-core processor variants and beyond on VME and VPX architectures. Orders for the first Kontron Layerscape products will be shipped by March 2018.
The Layerscape family challenges established solutions in very compute-intensive Industrial, Aerospace and Defense applications, enabling developers of High Performance Embedded Computing (HPEC) systems.
“The performance scaling of the Layerscape processors, and the product longevity commitment from NXP, will make our new SBC family meet all the new expectations of embedded applications” said Laurent Remont, CTO of Kontron S&T, “Our standard VME and VPX products are the best upgrade of legacy products, ranging from a less than 10W and 5kDMIPS version to a more than 45kDMIPS at less than 26W.”
