At the field, or edge level, data is collected by industrial computers, e.g. by gateways, which process, filter, analyze and act on these data in real-time right at the device.
Edge, fog and cloud applications demand increasing computing power. The interfaces to sensors or machines often require non-standard solutions. Especially in smaller machines, space is limited or restricted in some dimension and need a special solution.
Today, the connection from the sensor device to the embedded cloud takes place via real-time data communication, on sensor and edge level - for example Industrial Ethernet or fieldbuses - and gateways , which provide the transformation of real time data into the informational area.

Kontron AG appoints Michael Boy as new Chief Financial Officer
Eching near Munich, May 20th 2014 – Kontron AG, a leading global provider of Embedded Computer Technology (ECT), appoints Michael Boy (52) as its new Chief Financial Officer effective 16 June 2014. In his role, he will be responsible for Finance & Controlling, Treasury, M&A, Legal & Compliance, Investor Relations and Internal Audit.
“With Michael Boy, we were able to enlist a dedicated and seasoned finance executive who will complete Kontron’s management team”, said Rainer Erlat, Chairman of the Supervisory Board. “His expertise and broad experience in international companies will take Kontron AG forward in a crucial area of its operations: building up and optimising a modern, global financial management. He will make an important contribution to steering our company into a promising future with sustainable profitability.”
Michael Boy has served as Faber-Castell AG’s CFO (Finance and Controlling) since 2006. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing all commercial activities globally, and for setting up domestic and international companies. Among other things, the trained financial mathematician designed and optimised the company’s finance and controlling functions, thus securing the funding of strong corporate growth. Before that, Michael Boy was a member of the European management team at International Flavors & Fragrances in the Netherlands, where he was Finance Director for the EMEA region. The international scope of his activities was also evident while working for consumer goods company Unilever, where, between 1988 and 2002, he drove the company’s internationalisation as well as efficiency increases of individual divisions.
