Kontron introduces Embedded ATX computer board using two Intel. Xeon Processors with 512KB L2 cache at 2.0GHz and dual Gigabit Ethernet

Code named Shasta, this computer board is designed for low profile embedded appliances

Intel Developer Forum, San Francisco, CA, February 25, 2002 - Kontron, a leading global embedded computer technology company, today announced the availability of the Shasta Embedded ATX computer board featuring dual Intel® XeonTM Processors with 512KB L2 cache at 2.0GHz (other processor speeds are available from Kontron upon request).

"The low profile appliance market segment has unique characteristics and a lot of commonality", stated Joe Jensen, GM of the Embedded Intel Architecture Division of Intel Corporation. "It has requirements such as enclosure heights, scalability across multiple platforms and peripherals, and passive thermal solutions for reliability and for noise and cost reductions. We are pleased that Kontron has chosen the Intel Xeon processors to participate in this market, applying their design and development capabilities, bringing a high performance, leading edge, standards-based networking appliance to market fast."

"Kontron´s computer boards and systems have been going into low profile communications appliance applications and kiosks for many years already", stated Bryan Murphy, VP Engineering, Kontron America. "Developing the Shasta, particularly with the impressive performance of the dual Intel Xeon processors and the high I/O bandwidth, means delivering to our customers a form factor specifically engineered to meet their particular multimedia and interoperability design challenges, as well as their constant cost and time-to-market pressures."

The Shasta computer board is based on the Intel? E7500 chipset and contains two processor sockets, four memory DIMM sockets, dual Gigabit Ethernet controllers, a PMC interface, two IDE drive connectors, six USB ports and a PCI-X compliant off-board edge connector for PCI expansion. The Shasta Computer board is on display in the Intel pavilion during the Intel Developer Forum (Intel IDF Spring, 2002) at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA from February 25 - 28, 2002.

In addition to customer-specific designs, Shasta boards can be easily integrated into Kontron´s award-winning Omnix series chassis, which range from 1U to 6U with multiple system configuration options. The market segment that can benefit from this board consists of networking, VPN, attached storage networks, kiosk and transaction terminals among others.

Shasta Beta samples will be available in May. Volume production is expected for Q2, 2002.
