Kontron low power boards excel in graphics and CPU performance while also offering enhanced security and middleware functions
Eching/Nuremberg, Germany, February 25, 2014 – Kontron today announced two new embedded motherboards with Intel® Atom™ processor E3800 series. These particulary energy-efficient SoC boards in the form factors Pico-ITX and Mini-ITX excel with their outstanding graphics and powerful processor performance while consuming only a few watts. They also offer added value with their hardware-integrated security features for IoT applications as well as their KEAPI implementation, a platform-independent middleware, which allows access routines to hardware resources to be standardized. Once programmed, application code can be re-applied with identical functionality without any changes. This simplifies porting, reduces development costs and shortens time-to-market.
The energy-saving, low-power design of the new embedded motherboards in Pico-ITX and Mini-ITX form factors can easily be integrated into existing systems without any further design effort, making them ready to use right out of the box. Applications can be found anywhere, where low power consumption and high energy efficiency are required in combination with x86 performance that has not been available up until now. Embedded applications range from POS/POI systems and kiosk terminals with up to two independent monitors up to digital signage players or professional gaming computers. Industrial applications can be found in HMIs, control systems and automation computers as well as in medical PCs. Outdoor and in-vehicle computing applications can be covered too, as the boards can also be deployed in extended temperature ranges of up to -25°C to +75°C (E1).
Pico-ITX motherboard Kontron pITX-E38
The new Pico-ITX with long-term availability in the smallest embedded motherboard form factor (2.5") is equipped with Intel® Atom™ processor E3800 SoC series and ready to use right out of the box. Its particulary small footprint of 100 mm × 72 mm boasts a rich feature set. Most notable are the bootable slot for micro-SD cards and the mPCIe slot, which can also be used for mSATA drives. Another important feature to highlight is that the board has been consistently designed for deployment in harsh industrial environments, which, for example, the lockable DC connectors (5V) and the extended temperature range of -25°C to +75°C (E1) demonstrate. Further features include two independent graphic outputs (DP + LVDS), 1x Gigabit Ethernet, 1x USB 3.0 and 3x USB 2.0. First samples of the new Pico-ITX motherboards with long-term availability will become available in March 2014. Further information is available at the Kontron pITX-E38 product website.
Mini-ITX motherboard Kontron mITX-E38
The up to 7 years long-term available, new Mini-ITX embedded motherboard with Intel® Atom™ processor E3800 SoC series does not require any additional PCB designs and is therefore also immediately deployable. Thanks to its ATX-compatible design, a large number of system components are already available, which reduces individual development work to a minimum. The fully industrial-grade design differentiates the board significantly from commercial Mini-ITX offerings which are less robust and only available in identical configuration for short periods. This also has an influence on the interfaces. The board supports not only Display Port 1.1a but also 24bit LVDS. And, besides the innovative IoT connection via 3G/4G SIM card-slot, serial interfaces are available too. The mPCIe slot supports mSATA or mPCIe extensions. The operating system and application code can be stored on the 16 GB-sized bootable NAND Flash memory (eMMC). Numerous standard interfaces, amongst others GbE, SATA and USB, are, of course, also integrated on this new Mini-ITX motherboard, which becomes available in April 2014.
