Kontron ThinkIO-Duo: the Fanless Top-Hat Rail PC with Two Cores

Two Computer Cores in One Chip: Nearly Twice the Performance

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 4, 2007 – Kontron announced today, during the Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley, the release of the Kontron ThinkIO-Duo, the latest model in its top-hat, fanless PC range. Complex applications which demand the high standards of Intel® Dual-core technology will thrive from its robust design and high computing performance.

The extremely modular Kontron ThinkIO-Duo (70mm deep / 35mm slot level) is equipped with an Intel® Core™ Duo U2500 processor with a clock rate of 2 x 1.2 GHz and 512MB or 1GB of RAM. Along with high computing performance and internal Flash (512MB/2GB), this passively-cooled PC, also offers a customizable CompactFlash socket for data storage or backups/updates, 512KB non-volatile memory and all the standard PC interfaces (2 x USB 2.0, RS232, DVI-I). Three LAN interfaces make it simple to connect a variety of media such as cameras or a WLAN router. Users can also implement an Ethernet-based ‘software’ field bus. In addition, remote access/monitoring and control or connection to the company’s MES or ERP systems and databases are possible. There are also interrupt-capable onboard inputs which can be used for rapid reaction to extreme events, such as activating a cut-off switch. Watchdog and real-time clock round out the system’s features. Similar to all of the Kontron ThinkIO family, the option is available for the WAGO 750/753 I/O clamps to be connected directly.

The Kontron ThinkIO-Duo is available with Windows XP Embedded or a Linux OSADL software package which offers ‘innate’ real-time behavior. The Dual-core technology used with Linux or Windows XPe makes Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) possible, offering the user more computing performance without a significant increase in thermal design power. Another component of dual core technology is Intel® Virtualization Technology, which makes hardware administration even simpler.

Kontron offers its OEM customers the opportunity to significantly reduce their time to market with the Kontron ThinkIO-Duo. By building applications on the integrated platform offered by the Kontron ThinkIO, designers will now be able to focus on other items such as software development and system integration. In addition, the total cost of ownership is kept low by the maintenance-free, flexible, and robust design of the Kontron ThinkIO-Duo.
