Eching, Germany/Barcelona, Spain, February 11, 2008 − Kontron, a leading global provider of embedded and open modular solutions for the communications market, revealed today at the Mobile World Congress the Kontron OM5080, a MicroTCA integrated platform that supports up to 8 AdvancedMC modules. Kontrons latest open modular solution is ideal for telecom equipment manufacturers who need to design redundant systems without any single point of failure for edge and access applications used in data center, regional CO, and enterprise networks.
The Kontron OM5080 represents a 2U off-the-shelf platform that achieves an industry-first by accommodating up to 8 AMCs within the most space-efficient and cost-optimized design. The Kontron OM5080 realizes its cost savings by implementing the MCH and Power Module functionality in a different way, namely by using AMC carriers with integrated switches that provide Ethernet connectivity for 1 GbE Fabric or 10 GbE fabric in combination with two uplink modules on the front. The 1GbE version provides a total of 8x GbE uplinks on the front, the 10 GbE version provides a total of 4 GbE uplinks plus 2x 10 GbE uplinks. Thus, the system is very well suited for applications with high demands on traffic and throughput.
Management functions such as power and fan control, E-Keying, control of hot-swap for AMCs and external management interfaces are integrated on the same AMC carrier, as well as on the management module, which also provides an indication about power and fans on the front, as well as a connector for an external System Alarm Panel.
The Kontron OM5080 contains dual power distribution, dual fans, redundant system management, systems alarms on front, integrated dual GbE switches (with MCH functionality) and provides a high uplink capacity via uplink modules on the front. Most components are accessible from the front and all modules are field replaceable. The system is ready for deployment and includes Kontron system management (IPMI 1.5 compliant) as well as SNMP and CLI for external system management.
As a pre-integrated MicroTCA platform, the Kontron OM5080 comes with two Kontron AM4010 processor AMCs, each one featuring an Intel® Core 2 Duo processor each with dedicated memory, and with Linux OS installed. Both Kontron AM4010 modules are intended to act as system controllers, while the remaining AMC slots may be used for line cards, DSPs or Network Service Processors. Optionally, RTMs may be used in the back for SAS connections to external storage and external clocks, as well as for extra FE and RS232 management interfaces.
Other platform features include a 48V DC power feed with an option for AC to DC power converter, plus hot-swappable and managed fans, and support for Wind River Linux PNE 2.6, Red Hat 4.0, and IPMI 1.5.
