Kontron platforms meet long-term DoD UAS roadmap requirements for modularity, safety-critical interoperability and optimized SWaP-C

Kontron excels at advanced integration of multi-core, small form factor solutions that support the diverse range of UAS compute-intensive imaging and sensor control payloads

Augsburg, Germany April 27, 2016Kontron, a global market leader for embedded computing technology (ECT), offers the industry’s largest selection of technically advanced hardware solutions including application-ready COTS boards and platforms and rugged enclosures.  Streamlining the development of Unmanned Autonomous Systems (UAS), Kontron’s solutions are designed to meet the Department of Defense (DoD) long-term UAS roadmap requirements for standards-based, high performance, modular and safety-critical interoperability in size, weight, power and cooling (SWaP-C)-optimized form factors. Kontron’s decades of experience in satisfying computational, sensor and bandwidth system demands have resulted in proven system building blocks. These solutions give UAS developers the system efficiencies and autonomous operation capabilities outlined as critical to accomplishing DoD mission objectives.  Kontron will display its full line of rugged computing platforms at AUVSI-XPONENTIAL, May 2-5 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans at booth #779, Hall 1.

Kontron excels at small system integration that is ideal for a full range of UAS deployments, in particular the military’s small hand-carried UAV/UGV applications. For example, the MIL-STD COBALT 901 provides an application-ready and ITAR-free HMI or surveillance controller system designed for rigorous environments.  Its small, fully sealed IP67 enclosure and Intel multi-core processing performance make it an optimal solution for sensor control and various processing needs on unmanned vehicles.

DDC selected Kontron’s market leading computing solutions to provide a series of optimized, scalable, rugged connectivity platforms for the unmanned defense market” said Greg Tiedemann, DDC’s Data Bus Solutions Director.  “DDC’s most recent Rugged Compact Avionics Interface Computer (AIC-RC) features Kontron’s Intel Atom COM Express Processor to host a wide range of expansion options, enabling seamless connectivity with Ethernet, MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429/717, CANbus, Video, WiFi, GPS, Power Control, Motor Control and Motion Feedback.”

For UAV/UGV real-time, compute intensive image processing needs, Kontron is now shipping its small, powerful VX3058 board.  The VX3058 delivers breakthrough digital signal processing (DSP) performance based on the 8-core version of the Intel® Xeon® Processor D architecture (Broadwell DE), supports 10 gigabit (Gb) Ethernet and PCI Express 3.0 in a small 3U VPX conduction cooled package.  Also based on the Intel® Xeon® Processor D-1500 processor is Kontron’s COMe-bBD6 COM Express® Computer-on-Module.  Providing the most powerful and yet smallest module in its class on the market today, the COMe-bBD6 brings next-generation CPU-intensive analytics and communications capabilities to unmanned systems.

Kontron’s latest CompactPCI single board computers (SBCs) provide the rugged, multi-core processing performance needed by UAV/UGVs and at a very attractive cost/feature balance.  Kontron’s 3U and 6U CompactPCI blades and full-featured CompactPCI Layer 2/Layer3 switches provide the necessary high-speed processing throughput for reliable operation in high temperature, shock and vibration UAS environments. These SBCs can also maximize system efficiencies, for example, by off offloading the post processing required of many unmanned applications such as large amounts of GPS tagged imagery.
